Currant pruning should be done every year. Without pruning, the plants will become overgrown, become overly dense, unkempt and, as a result, will begin to suffer (primarily powdery mildew). You shouldn’t hope for good harvests from overgrown bushes either.
In amateur gardening, it is enough to prune currants once a year. This is done either late in the fall, after leaf fall, or early in the spring before the buds open. When pruning in spring, it is very important to do it on time, that is, before the sap begins to flow. Therefore, this event cannot be postponed until “later”. In spring, bushes are pruned at the end of March or early April.
The video tutorials provided show in detail, clearly and professionally how to properly trim black and red currants.
Pruning currants in spring
From a practical point of view, it is better to prune in the fall, usually in early November. In late autumn, gardeners usually have more time, and even if for some reason you don’t have time, you can prune in early spring. In the spring, you will be limited by strict time frames.

Be careful! Black and red currants need to be trimmed differently. If you prune red currant bushes in the same way as black currants, you risk being left without half the harvest. In red varieties, the harvest is formed not only on young, but also on old branches, which bear fruit for 6-8 years. Therefore, anti-aging pruning of red currants is done much less frequently than black currants. In the next video you will see how to do this correctly.

An adult red currant bush should consist of about 20 branches of different ages. To grow a bush consisting of branches of different ages, you need to leave three of the strongest young shoots every year and remove the rest. It is advisable to leave shoots that grow in different directions. Thus, after 7 years the bush will consist of 20 - 23 branches and then it will be possible to begin annual pruning.
Every autumn, remove 3 - 4 old branches, and in return leave 3 - 4 young, zero shoots, and so on every year.

Bushes can be formed in different ways. If plants are planted along a fence, then it is advisable to grow them as a trellis crop. It is not only convenient, but also beautiful. However, forming shrubs in standard form is even more beautiful and original. You can read more about this Here.
