Description of the Lord variety
Lord is a mid-late strawberry variety, non-repairing. Its main feature is long fruiting - from the end of June to the end of July.
The bushes are large, with a large head of foliage, the growth is moderate, and gradually decreases with age. The berries are large, conical, red, in the sun - dark red, with aroma. The weight of the first berries is 60-80 g, the mass harvest is 30-40 g, the last berries are 15-20 g. The yield is high - up to 1 kg per bush. The pulp is dense, juicy, strawberries are suitable for storage and transportation. It does not boil over in preparations and retains its shape.
Advantages of the variety.
- Commercial form of fruits.
- High yield.
- Good winter hardiness and frost resistance. Under snow without shelter it tolerates frosts down to -20°C.
- Sufficient resistance to gray rot and strawberry mite.
- Resistant to returning spring frosts.
- The unpretentiousness of strawberries.
Flaws.
- In rainy weather the berries become sour.
- The fruits are hollow inside.
- With age, the taste and aroma of berries becomes less pronounced.
- The bushes are not resistant to leaf spot.
It grows well both in the south (provided proper watering) and in the middle zone. Suitable for cultivation in Siberia, Altai, and the Far East. In Siberia and Altai, the Lord winters only with shelter.
Features of growing strawberries Lord
Caring for Lord is easy. If you follow the rules of agricultural technology, strawberries consistently produce high yields.
Strawberry bushes are large and fluffy, so planting is carried out according to the 40x60 cm pattern. In the second year, young rosettes grow and occupy all the free space of the garden bed.Large row spacing is also needed for rooting of mustaches. When the beds become overgrown, the strawberries become smaller and the yield is significantly reduced.
Lord gives high yields only in sunny places. When planted in partial shade, the berries become smaller, become sour, and the strawberry aroma disappears.
In some sources you can find information that the variety can be grown in one place for up to 8-10 years. But such a period of operation of the plantation is possible only on rich chernozem soils subject to constant fertilizing. At the same time, the berries still become smaller to 20-25 g, and the yield decreases. To obtain consistently high yields, it is necessary to renew the plot every 4-5 years.
The variety is very sensitive to lack of moisture and reacts to this by reducing the taste of the berries.
In dry summers, watering is carried out 2 times a week. If the summer is very rainy, then you need to cover the beds with film, since the fruits with excess moisture become sour and lose their marketable qualities.
Strawberries are very responsive to fertilizing, and Lord responds more strongly to organic matter than to mineral fertilizers. The best fertilizer for this variety is chicken manure. They are carried out in early spring when the leaves grow, after harvesting and in September. Some recommend feeding 4 times, but overfeeding, firstly, can lead to fattening of the bushes, and secondly, to weakened immunity and severe damage to strawberries by diseases. If there is no organic matter, then it is better to feed the strawberries with herbal fertilizer than with mineral fertilizer.
Since the variety is quite winter-hardy and frost-resistant, in the southern regions and middle zone it can winter without shelter. Beyond the Urals, bushes are covered for the winter or simply covered with earth. This must be done when consistently cold weather sets in, since in Siberia the highest percentage of this variety freezes out in the fall, when the cold weather sets in, but there is not yet sufficient snow cover. In the spring there are attacks of individual bushes, but the variety does not completely freeze out.
Since strawberries have a high yield and there are many berries on one bush, they put firewood, plastic bottles under them, or put special rings so that the fruits do not come into contact with the ground.
Lord breeds with mustache, which are taken for 2-3 years of cultivation.
Comparison of Lord and Festivalnaya varieties
Most often, the Lord variety is compared with the Soviet gold standard - the Festival strawberry. Both varieties are similar in agricultural technology and growing conditions.
Index | Lord | Festival |
---|---|---|
Light | Produces large sweet berries only in sunny places. In the shade, the fruits acquire a sour taste | Fruits well even under the canopy of trees. Neither yield nor taste is affected |
Warm | Heat-resistant and does not require special temperature conditions | Tolerates both very high temperatures and cold summers without problems |
Moisture | In dry summers it requires watering. Excess moisture causes the taste of berries to deteriorate. | Tolerates drought well. Tolerates short-term flooding |
Pest and disease damage | Affected by various types of spots | Gray rot of berries is the scourge of this variety. Susceptible to powdery mildew in rainy summers |
Winter hardiness and frost resistance | High. In regions with little snow or very harsh winters, shelter is required | High. In the European part of the country it winters without shelter. In Siberia it is necessary to cover for the winter |
Resistance to spring frosts | Stable | Stable |
Feeding | For a high yield, 3 times fertilizing is required | Not demanding. Can produce high yields without them |
Transportability | good | good |
Storage and procurement | Can be stored for 3 days. Does not boil over in preparations | Stored for 3 days. Retains its shape in blanks |
As can be seen from the table Lord is somewhat more high maintenancethan Festival strawberries, but in general these strawberries are unpretentious and quite easy to grow.
The Lord variety is perfect for any climatic zone of Russia. It can be recommended as a very good foreign variety to everyone who grows strawberries for personal consumption. It is also suitable for industrial cultivation.

Review of Lord strawberries from the Krasnodar region:
“The Lord has taken root in our area for a long time and somehow I can’t find a worthy replacement for him. I like this berry for its beautiful appearance, taste, and resistance to our heat. How nice it is to take these berries out of the freezer in winter and breathe in the aroma of summer..."
Review of the Lord variety from Dnepropetrovsk:
Lord's first harvest in general (planting was last year, but I picked the berries for better rooting). beautiful, tasty
but it’s a bit empty inside... the watering is good, the bed is mulched.
what is missing in care? Or are these features of the variety with a large berry?
in general, the variety is interesting so far, it suits me in terms of ripening time to maintain sequence with other varieties on my site
Review of Lord from Barnaul:
“My main strawberry variety is Lord!”
We refused this variety - it didn’t look very good to us!!! Yes, large (5 berries per bucket - a joke) and juicy, that’s probably all the advantages of Lord, but in terms of taste and aroma there are much more worthy varieties!! Yes, and because of their large size, he has a lot of berries inside that are empty!!! And as for 10 years - this is really true - my brother had about 14 years old in one place and grew relatively untidy and gave decent harvests!!! By the way, they took the seedlings from him!! !
This is how gardeners respond to Lord strawberries.
