Heucheras are easily propagated by seeds. You just need to take into account that the offspring of most varieties do not inherit the maternal qualities; seedlings often return to wild forms.
As a rule, seeds are sold in stores
- heuchera blood red
- Heuchera Purple Palace
- mixture called “The King’s New Clothes”
All of them can perfectly decorate the garden.
Heuchera blood-red, having simple green leaves, blooms very brightly and for a long time and lives in one place for a long time. |
Heuchera Purple Palace is a large plant with large green-purple leaves. And also long-lived. |
The King's New Clothes mixture produces several types of heuchera with green and reddish-purple leaves, most of them very curly. |
Hybrid heucheras are not propagated by seeds; they are propagated by dividing the bush and cuttings.
Prepare the soil and start sowing
To sow heuchera seeds, take compost, one third consisting of river sand or perlite (both can be bought in the store in winter). Fill a container 5-6 cm high with holes in the bottom with this mixture. Compact the mixture (0.5 cm should remain to the edge of the container), pour with warm water.
When the water is absorbed, start sowing. Mix the seeds with sand, pour them into a regular salt shaker and carefully, trying to distribute them evenly over the surface of the soil, sow them. Distribute the seeds from one bag into 2-3 containers so that they do not sprout very densely.
After this, spray the surface of the compost with water from a spray bottle. The weight of the water will press the seeds slightly into the soil. After this, cover the container with film or glass and place it in a warm, bright place.
Shoots appear quickly in about two weeks. Until this moment, do not water the crops, since the moisture from the closed container does not evaporate and is quite enough for seed germination. |
A few days after germination, open the containers. After this, make sure that the soil does not dry out, but water very carefully, literally in a drip manner.
Three weeks after emergence (under good conditions and care), the seedlings grow four true leaves. |
This means that it’s time to plant the heuchera in separate cups (yogurt cups are very suitable for this). The seedlings are varied in size.
Choose the largest ones; the smallest ones will never develop into full-fledged plants.
Picking seedlings
Picking heuchera is a painstaking job, one might say, a piece of jewelry. Use a wooden toothpick or a pointed match to make a deep hole in the compost. Using the same “tool,” remove the seedling from the container and help it carefully place the roots in the holes made.
Now we have almost grown heuchera from seeds, there is very little left. |
Using the smallest spoon (for example, for mustard), compact the soil around the seedling, add compost if necessary. Place the cups in the brightest place.
Seedlings will need a lot of light
The optimal temperature for growing heuchera is no higher than 16-18 degrees. Such a microclimate can be provided to plants on the windowsill.
To keep plants from stretching, they need a lot of light. To do this, do this. Take a cardboard box, preferably an elongated one, cut it along two long edges, and the ends diagonally. The result will be two halves of a box with a triangular cross-section. Wrap the inside of these halves with foil.
Behind such a screen, flower seedlings will be light and cool |
Place it on the windowsill with a high wall facing the room (the foil should face the window, not the room) - you will get a reflective screen that will additionally illuminate the seedlings and provide a little protection from the warm air of the room. At the same time, the seedlings will grow compact and will not stretch out.
In May, plant the plants in open ground in a protected semi-shaded place and water regularly.
