Preparing the soil for planting. Growing carrots is possible on almost any soil, if they are prepared in advance, taking into account the preferences of this crop: before planting, light sandy soils are enriched with good humus (not to be confused with manure, which is contraindicated for carrots), and compost; Heavy soils are dug up using a spade, adding sand and compost.
When digging, add a tablespoon of superphosphate and potassium sulfate per square meter. m. It is better to do all this in the fall, and early in the spring to loosen it and scatter a teaspoon of urea per square meter. m, even before sowing, cover the soil with film to provoke the germination of weed seeds, and loosen it again before planting, destroying the emerging grass seedlings.

We choose a place. Choose a well-lit, ventilated place for planting. This is necessary in order to reduce the risk of root crops being damaged by the carrot fly, which likes to “work” in damp, shaded places, to prevent fungal diseases.
Peas, green crops, zucchini, cucumbers, cabbage, onions, and garlic are considered good predecessors. Carrots are returned to their original place no earlier than after 3-4 years.

What varieties to choose for planting. Carrot varieties are selected depending on the mechanical composition of the soil. On light soils it is better to grow varieties that form long root crops. This carrot looks very attractive. On heavy soils that become compacted after watering, it is better to plant short-fruited varieties: “long” carrots on heavy soil are not beautiful, and the tip of root crops often rots when it reaches a dense layer of soil (“sole”).
When choosing varieties, take into account not only the length of the fruit, but also the ripening time. For summer consumption, it is better to plant early varieties that are ready for harvest in June-July. For winter storage, varieties with a longer growing season are grown. Early carrots are also suitable for winter storage if you sow them not in spring, but in June.

Preparing seeds for planting. So, the varieties for planting were chosen and the bed was prepared. Now let’s decide for ourselves: to soak the seeds before sowing or not? We do not soak the seeds if they have been treated by the manufacturer (there should be information about this on the bag). But we don’t always soak untreated seeds either. It is better to leave the seeds alone if we are not sure that we will be able to sow them on time (the weather will interfere, etc.).
To remove essential oils from seeds that interfere with germination, soak the seeds (put them in a cloth bag) for a day, changing the water several times. Then dry until fluffy. The process can be speeded up by soaking in warm water. The seeds can then be kept in a damp cloth until they hatch. If it is not possible to sow the seeds right away, we move them to the refrigerator, making sure that they do not freeze or dry out.
Planting carrots. We sow the seeds in well-watered furrows made 20 cm apart. Planting depth is 1 cm. After sowing, lightly compact the soil surface with a rake, mulch with compost or cover with non-woven material. The film is only suitable in cold weather. In hot weather, seedlings in the bed under the film may die.

What crops can carrots be grown with? It is not at all necessary to grow carrots in a separate bed. It can be planted alternating with early ripening crops (radish, lettuce, spinach).Very often, carrots are grown in the same bed with onions. These two crops help each other repel their main pests: the smell of carrots disorients the onion fly, and the onion “aroma” disorients the carrot fly.
True, there are some inconsistencies in agricultural technology, since carrots require watering right up to harvesting, and onions need a dry period for good ripening. A solution can be found by planting early carrots together with onions. It grows earlier than onions and, by removing the root crops, it is possible to stop watering the onions and give them the opportunity to ripen well.
You can plant it in one row along the edge of a bean or pea bed. Carrots are also grown next to cucumbers or tomatoes. The main thing is that they do not obscure it. And she won’t bother her tall neighbors.

How to care for seedlings. In cool weather, the seeds should have enough moisture to germinate without watering. Especially if the bed is mulched or covered. If we see that the top layer of soil is drying out, carefully water the bed with a watering can.
The most difficult period of caring for carrots is post-emergence. And you need to water carefully so as not to damage the tender seedlings, and you will have to work hard with weeding, especially if there is a large supply of weed seeds in the soil.
If you are a little late, you will have to look for tender carrot shoots among the weeds. In the initial period, you have to manually rid the carrot bed of weeds. But once we try hard enough, we will create room for the carrots to grow.

Thinning of seedlings. It is very important to thin out the seedlings in time. If you don’t do this, you’ll end up with a lot of small, intertwined root vegetables that no housewife will want to peel.
The first thinning is carried out at the stage of 1-2 true leaves, increasing the distance between plants in a row to 1 cm. At the stage of five true leaves, the carrots are thinned out again so that the plants are approximately 4 cm apart from each other.
More sparse sowing is undesirable: root crops, trying to take over free space, begin to “branch”. It is better to thin carrots in the evening, when the carrot fly is not flying, and immediately take the torn plants away from the garden bed so as not to attract the pest with the smell.
To fight off the “carrot spirit”, after thinning the garden bed, you can water it with an infusion of onion peels and scatter leaves of some fragrant herb (sage, lemon balm, thyme, marigold, etc.) between the rows. This procedure is useful to carry out not only after thinning.

How to water. Water 1-2 times a week. The regularity and intensity of watering depends on the weather, the phase of plant development, and the mechanical composition of the soil. During the initial period of growing carrots, we water them frequently, without soaking the soil very deeply. As the root crops grow, we soak the soil deeper and deeper, not forgetting that carrots do not like waterlogging. Before harvesting, reduce watering.
After each watering, we loosen the soil, burying the tops of root crops that appear above the soil surface so that they do not turn green and begin to taste bitter.
Feeding. While growing carrots, we feed them several times. To stimulate the growth of leaves at the stage of 3-4 true leaves, water with an organic infusion (a glass of mullein or bird droppings in a bucket of water). If there is no organic matter, we use mineral fertilizers: Art. a spoonful of potassium magnesium and a teaspoon of urea per 10 liters of water.
But it must be taken into account that excess nitrogen negatively affects the taste and appearance of root vegetables: they grow “branchy” and “hairy”. After 2-3 weeks we feed a second time: tbsp. spoon of potassium sulfate per 10 liters of water.
During the period of growth of root crops, we give potassium again: 1-1.5 tbsp. spoons of potassium sulfate per 10 liters of water. This diet is considered a recommendation only. We correct it, taking into account the “richness” and mechanical composition of the soil in the garden bed, applying fertilizers for the previous crop, and autumn digging.
You can feed carrots with complex fertilizers, wood ash, potassium humate, HB-101. On sandy soils you will have to feed more often than on heavy soils, but with solutions of lower concentration.

Harvest. In order for carrots to remain vigorous and tasty, it is very important to remove them on time. We dig up the root crops with a pitchfork and then pull them out of the ground “by the braids.” We cut off the tops immediately. Carrots sown in spring should not be kept in the garden until October. It is better to dig it up in July-August, wash it, put it in bags and store it in the refrigerator. We dig up summer-sown carrots late in the fall so that, after drying quickly, they can immediately be stored in a cold place.
