Planting honeysuckle

Edible honeysuckle, so familiar and familiar to residents of Siberia and Kamchatka, has only recently become beloved and popular among gardeners in Central Russia. Considering the ease of cultivation, and most importantly the huge range of various vitamins and minerals contained in the fruits of this plant, such interest is understandable. In this regard, many gardeners are interested in the technology of planting and growing this shrub.

Planting edible honeysuckle begins with careful selection of seedlings. The average yield of honeysuckle is 1 - 2 kg. from one bush. But currently, varieties have been developed from which up to 6 kg of berries are harvested per bush. And the size of the berries reaches 4 cm instead of the previous 1 - 2 cm. So the time spent searching for good planting material will not be wasted.

Planting edible honeysuckle has another important feature. Honeysuckle is a cross-pollinated plant. In order for it to bear fruit, it is necessary to plant two or three bushes of different varieties. Compact planting is desirable, then cross-pollination will be better. Accordingly, the harvest will be better.

For planting, try to select 3-year-old seedlings with well-developed roots, no more than half a meter in height and with at least three shoots. Usually, when planting berry crops, it is recommended to shorten the shoots; when planting edible honeysuckle, this should not be done.

Growing edible honeysuckle

Honeysuckle belongs to the category of shade-tolerant and undemanding crops. Planted in the shade and on poor soils, it will still grow and bear fruit. However, the size of the fruit, and the harvest as a whole, will be unenviable. It is better to plant it in a bright place. She prefers loamy soil, rich in organic matter with a pH of 5.5 - 6.5.

It is best to place young bushes along the fence, at a distance of at least one and a half meters from each other. Edible honeysuckle is a tall shrub. Mature bushes grow up to 1.8 m, and some varieties grow in diameter up to 2 m and have 13 - 18 skeletal branches.

For For planting, prepare holes 30 cm deep and 50 cm wide. Before planting in the hole, it is recommended to add one, or better yet, two buckets of humus, a glass of superphosphate and two glasses of ash. If there is none of this, then you can fill the planting hole with fertile soil mixed with 150 g of complex mineral fertilizer. If the soil is highly acidic, add 150 g of lime to the hole after planting. Be sure to water the seedlings thoroughly and mulch the tree trunks.

Plants in the garden

Be prepared for the fact that the seedlings will grow very slowly at first. Active growth will begin only a year or two after planting. such is the peculiarity of this culture.

Young bushes should be watered rarely, but abundantly. Honeysuckle prefers moist soil, but without stagnant water. If you added fertilizer during planting, this is enough for the plants to develop within 2 to 3 years. Subsequently, it is recommended to feed honeysuckle every two years. It is better to use organic matter or complex fertilizer.

Pruning honeysuckle

When pruning honeysuckle, the first thing to remember is that You cannot trim the tops of the shoots. It is on them that the main part of the fruit buds is located. By cutting them, you will remove most of the crop with your own hands. Unless absolutely necessary, you should not cut off skeletal branches at the very base, since replacement shoots grow from dormant buds that are located in the branching of these branches.

The first pruning should be carried out only 5 - 7 years after planting. Pruning consists ofShrub trimming. removing branches directed inside the crown, old drying branches. In case of strong thickening, the least developed, weak shoots should be cut out, thereby thinning the crown of the bush. Branches lying on the ground and simply heavily shaded, lower branches that do not participate in fruiting, are necessarily discarded. The picture shows a honeysuckle bush before pruning and the same bush after proper pruning.

Sometimes severe, rejuvenating pruning is necessary. In this case, the bush is cut off entirely, at a height of 50 cm from the ground. Young shoots will soon appear on the remaining stumps and the bush will begin to develop rapidly. You can help him with this by feeding him with nitrogen fertilizer.

Sanitary pruning of honeysuckle is carried out every two to three years. The best time for pruning is late autumn, but spring pruning is also acceptable.

As you can see, planting edible honeysuckle is not difficult. The problem may lie elsewhere - lack of planting material. But if you are familiar with plant cuttings, you can solve this problem. Honeysuckle cuttings take root quickly and easily. If one of your friends has this plant growing on their property, then by asking them for just one branch, you can grow and plant several seedlings at once.
