Mallow is a simple yet charming plant. This is a favorite flower of older people, a resident of front gardens, places where ordinary plants often did not survive.

This is a real giant among flowers, it has dark green, erect shoots with pubescence, reaching a height of three meters, but there are also compact forms only 80-100 cm in height.

It forms funnel-shaped flowers with a diameter of 8-15 cm of a wide variety of colors ranging from crystal white and delicate pink to bright red, from purple to almost black.

Mallows are opportunistic plants; they have high drought resistance and amazing cold resistance, resistance to most pests and diseases. They bloom very profusely and for a long time, often until late autumn. Rose stock seeds germinate very well, simply from self-sowing, which means there are no problems with reproduction.

In general, the rose stem is a perennial plant, but usually it is grown only as a biennial and correctly, because in the third year the plants bloom poorly and sometimes even die.

It is good to plant these flowers near a fence or the wall of a building.

Mallows are the ideal flowers for rural and romantic gardens. They look beautiful and natural near a wooden fence or building wall. In a flowerbed, it is better to grow them in the background so that they do not obscure low-growing plants. Cut flowers remain fresh for several weeks, you just need to regularly change the water in the vase.

Growing rose stock from seeds

There are three options for growing rose stems from seeds:

• Growing through seedlings.
• Planting seeds in open ground in spring.
• Planting seeds in open ground in the fall.

Growing seedlings

If you plant the seeds immediately in open ground, this is done at the end of May, then most varieties will not have time to bloom this season. Therefore, especially impatient gardeners grow stock roses through seedlings.

    When to sow? Seeds for seedlings are sown in February or March.When sown at this time, flowers usually bloom in late July or August.

  What kind of soil is needed? This plant is not picky, but it is better to choose loose, breathable soil, for example: two parts garden soil, one part sand, one part humus.

    Sowing seeds. The root of the rose stem is long and fibrous, which is why it is painful to transplant. If possible, it is better to immediately place the seeds in separate cups. If you sow in a common box, then try to pick up the seedlings early, before the roots of the plants have time to grow and intertwine with each other.

The seeds are distributed over the surface of the soil in such a way that there is a distance of 3 - 4 cm between them. After this, they are sprinkled with a thin layer of earth and thoroughly moistened. To make the moisture evaporate more slowly, cover the planting containers with film or glass.

    What temperature is required to grow seedlings? Rose stock seeds germinate well at a temperature of 18 - 20 degrees. Further cultivation of seedlings can be carried out under the same conditions. After seed germination, immediately remove the film and place the seedlings in the brightest place, in an apartment this is usually a window sill.

    Good lighting is a very important factor when growing not only rose stock, but also any other seedlings. If there is insufficient lighting, the seedlings are likely to stretch out and have a pale, sickly appearance. Therefore, when planting in February, it is advisable to provide the seedlings with additional, artificial lighting.

    Caring for seedlings. Caring for mallow seedlings is quite simple; you only need to water the plants occasionally. No feeding or treatment is required at the stage of growing seedlings.

    Planting in open ground. The rose stem is afraid of even light frosts, so you can plant seedlings in the garden only when the weather is warm. This happens differently in different regions, approximately this is the end of May, beginning of June.

    Landing scheme. Mallow plants are large and tall; they should be grown at a distance of 0.5 m from one another. If planted closer, the flower garden will look neglected and unkempt, and the flowering will not be as abundant.

Do not forget also that due to its size, the rose stem is a secondary plant. Everything planted behind the mallow will be lost and will not be visible.

Growing rose stock in open ground.

Spring planting. Since mallow is afraid of frost, it is better to sow seeds in the ground at the end of May, then the seedlings will not need film cover. As mentioned earlier, she does not like transplants, therefore the seeds must be sown immediately in a permanent place. Plant several seeds in one hole, then pull out the excess or replant.

The seeds are not planted deeply into the soil, 2 - 3 cm. Shoots appear in 2 - 3 weeks. Plants planted in spring usually do not have time to bloom in the first summer, and if they begin to bloom in the fall, it is better to cut off the shoots with buds. They still won’t have time to bloom in full force, let them gain strength for the upcoming winter and build up the root system.

    Autumn planting of rose stock. Some gardeners practice winter planting of mallow. With this method of growing, the plants will bloom much earlier next summer. However, it must be taken into account that when sowing in winter, seedlings will appear very early in the spring and will have to be carefully looked after. First of all, protect them from frost; if you are ready for this, then you can practice this method of growing.

    How to water. Young seedlings need watering the most. Adult plants are watered regularly, but not often, avoiding severe drying out of the soil. There is no need to over-moisten the soil, since the rose stem really does not like this. Water should be at the root, being careful not to get water on the leaves.

How to feed. During the season, mallow is fed twice, using universal fertilizer. It is also good to mulch the soil with compost. In general, you can grow stock roses without any fertilizing, but then the flowering will be much worse.

    Bloom. The first flowers of rose stems form from below; after they wither, they must be removed in order to stimulate the formation of new ones. If you want to collect your own seeds of the variety you like, leave a few boxes for ripening.

Most often, rose stems are affected by rust.

    Wintering. Mallow is able to winter without any shelter. But if the variety is delicate or it is a plant of the first year of life, in case of a harsh, snowless winter, it is better to cover the plantings with dry leaves, or use white agrofibre for this.

    Diseases and pests. Most often, the rose stem is affected by rust. Rusty spots appear on the bottom of the leaves and brown or white spots on the top. All affected leaves should be removed and better burned, and the plant itself should be treated with Bordeaux mixture. It is unlikely that this disease will be completely cured. In case of severe damage, the bush is dug up and burned to prevent the spread of this disease to other flowers.

In general, growing rose stems is not difficult and not at all troublesome.
