The timing of planting carrots is quite extended in time. If you want to grow early carrots, then they should be planted either before winter or in early spring. But late-ripening varieties that are left for winter storage are best planted at the end of May.
Winter sowing of carrots
The earliest carrots are obtained during winter sowing. In addition, crops that can withstand winter planting are best planted in late autumn. They will be able to use the abundant spring moisture and produce a generous and rich harvest. And you will have one less thing to worry about in the spring. Just need it choose seeds that are suitable for winter planting. Such as Moscow Winter or Nantes-4
Autumn sowing is not quite ordinary. It is necessary to sow carrots with the onset of frost so that the seeds do not have time to germinate. We prepare the bed in advance. Carrots grow well in loose, light soil. Therefore, we must dig up the bed deeply and add rotted sawdust or humus to it. We make furrows in the bed at a distance of 15-20 cm from each other and 3-4 cm deep.
The prepared bed should be covered with something. Then the furrows will not be washed away by rain, and if snow falls, it will be easier to remove it. Although the bed is already ready, it is still too early to plant carrots. You can’t rush with winter sowing. If the temperature outside the window is still above zero, it means that the time for planting carrots has not yet arrived.
You should start sowing only when frosty weather sets in. Even if it snows, it's not scary. You just need to sweep it out of the garden. Only dry seeds can be sown at this time. When the seeds are arranged in rows, cover them with soft soil or humus on top. The soil must be prepared in advance and stored so that it does not freeze. Lightly compact the furrows filled with humus and if there is snow, cover everything with snow.
If, with the arrival of spring, you cover the garden bed with lutrasil, you will get a carrot harvest even earlier. But it is not recommended to keep carrots under film for a long time. When shoots appear, it is better to remove it.
Planting carrots in spring.
In spring, the date for planting carrots is determined very simply. As soon as the snow melts and the soil dries out a little, you can start planting. A few days before planting, a film should be stretched over the bed. And when the soil under the film cover warms up, we begin sowing.
At a distance of 15-20 cm from each other, we make grooves approximately 2 cm deep. It is better not to draw grooves in the bed, but to press them in. To do this, you can use any slats, or even a shovel handle. Place a strip in the place of the future groove, press it firmly and get exactly the groove that you need.
We make these grooves throughout the entire bed. Then we spill them with water. It’s more convenient to water from a mug, as this way you won’t wash out the grooves or create unnecessary dirt.
Now everything is ready and you can proceed directly to sowing. Carrot sprouts should sit at a distance of 4-5 cm from each other. But it’s better to make a deliberately thickened planting, and then pull out the excess. It will be a shame if the seedlings are rare and there is a lot of free space in the garden bed.
The furrows with seeds should not be leveled, but filled with humus and lightly compacted. This is necessary so that the seeds are in close contact with the ground. Then they germinate better. All we have to do is water our garden bed with a watering can and cover it with film. But as mentioned above, when shoots appear, the film must be removed. Otherwise, only tops will grow under the film cover.
We planted early carrots. It remains to wait for the harvest. This will take approximately three months.
Planting late carrots.
There is no need to rush into sowing late carrots. Firstly, we have already planted the early one. Secondly, in the spring, gardeners already have a lot to do. But most importantly, if you plant carrots in late May or even early June, you will have much fewer pest problems. There are almost no carrot flies at this time.
It’s just that at this time it’s already getting hot and our plantings will need to be watered more often. You need to water the carrots abundantly so that the soil gets wet to the entire depth of the root crop. Surface watering may result in irregularly shaped fruits.
Last date for planting carrots.
The last date for planting carrots is quite easy to calculate. The growing season of late-ripening varieties is approximately four months. This means that in order to harvest in mid-October, it must be planted on June 15th.
We looked at the main dates for planting carrots. Now you know that early carrots should be planted before winter or in early spring. And for late, the optimal planting time is the end of May or the beginning of June.

Hello. Could you tell us how to properly grow potatoes in the Moscow region in conditions of rare attendance at the planting site, difficult environmental conditions and abnormal weather conditions that have been developing recently, as well as about the varieties preferred for cultivation in this region? Thank you.
Denis, the following potato varieties are well suited for planting in the Moscow region: Zhukovsky early, Prior, Auzenka, Rameno. Very good Bronnitsky variety. It is not only very productive, but also resistant to almost all diseases and does not require crop rotation. It can be planted in the same place every year (as we usually do). To obtain high potato yields, loose and fertile soil is crucial. In the fall, it is necessary to fertilize the area, spreading it over 100 square meters. m. 5 kg. urea, 4 kg. superphosphate, 2 kg. potassium sulfate. Or, when planting, add a kilogram of humus and a glass of ash to each hole. If you don’t have time to care for your potato plantings, try planting them under straw. With such planting, there is no need for weeding, hilling and watering. Many summer residents (but not all) like this method. You can read more about this growing method here
Everything should be planted in the spring, or rather. During the winter everything may freeze and will have to be replanted.
And I always plant carrots before winter. Never froze. Everything just needs to be done correctly and carefully. You will get your harvest much earlier.
Well, where are you in such a hurry? Planting carrot seeds before winter always carries the risk that all your work will be in vain. Plant in the spring and your carrots will have time to grow!
Everyone here has their own opinion. I will also express my opinion. For many years now I have been planting carrots in late autumn and they always overwinter well and sprout well in the spring. The main mistake when planting carrots before winter is early sowing of seeds in the ground. If the autumn is warm, the seeds begin to germinate, but the sprouted seeds will certainly die in winter. Take your time, sow the seeds when frosty weather sets in. Then your carrots will definitely survive the winter. Good luck to you!
In general, I completely agree with you. In general, I liked it, I’ll come here again, maybe I’ll see something new from you about planting before winter.
What’s there to argue about, whoever is more comfortable, he plants it that way. Even if you plant it before winter, even in the spring, carrots will still grow.
What other seeds can be planted before winter? Your feedback. What are the results? If it wouldn’t be too much trouble, I’m a beginner, but I really want to learn. I’m grateful in advance to anyone who doesn’t ignore an exciting question.
how and when and how much to feed carrots?
It is enough to feed carrots 2 times per season.
1. Approximately 3 weeks after germination with any complex fertilizer, for example nitrophoska 1 s. spoon for 10 l. water
2. A month after the first feeding with any phosphorus-potassium fertilizer, there are many different ones. Just make sure there is no nitrogen in it.
